Maspalomas - Gran Canaria - Canary Islands
These days pretty much joined as one huge resort with Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas however tries to cling on to its reputation as a more upmarket destination than its brasher neighbour. Bounded to the south by its famous Dunas de Maspalomas, the resort attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors throughout the year.

Maspalomas History: Being basically a built for tourism resort, there is very little history attached to the area of Maspalomas, and very little of historic interest in its environs, you could however take a trip the the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse, which marks the southermost tip of Gran Canaria and was first conceived in 1861, though not built until a little later (1884-1889), it was designed by Juan de León y Castillo and reaches a height of about 65 metres. Maspalomas is thought to have got its name from an early settler named Rodrigo Mas de Palomar a soldier from Mallorca, though this is by no means certain.
Overview: The longest established and largest holiday resort on the island of Gran Canaria, Maspalomas has everything the potential holidaymaker could desire (apart from culture!), its wonderful climate, which can be relied on all through the year (making it ideal for winter holidays), its fabulous Dunas de Maspalomas, sand dunes providing endless miles of sand, its top class hotels and apartment complexes, providing a good standard of accommodation, its hundreds of bars and restaurants, providing entertainment and sustenance, its theme parks and tourist attractions, ideal for keeping the kids amused, and its excellent sports and water sports facilities, providing something for the more energetic parents.
Now virtually joined to the noisier, livelier Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas is still considered to a little more upmarket, with a better class of hotel and a posher image.

Maspalomas Fiestas: Maspalomas Carnival (March), the 2010 event is to be held on 21st March, celebrations include the 'Burial of the Sardine', San Bartolome (August).
Maspalomas Markets: Street markets are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Dunas de Maspalomas: The famous sand dunes of Maspalomas are now mostly part of a protected Natural Park with a unique ecosystem, many have joined the efforts of a campaign to protect the area from the development which threatens it.
The Dunas de Maspalomas are popular with nudists (naturists) and also with gay men who cruise this area. Also part of the nature reserve is a salt lagoon and a palm grove. The best way to see the san dunes is to take one of the popular camel rides, the ride last about half an hour an costs around 12 euros at the time of writing.
Maspalomas Beaches: Perfect for your Gran Canaria holidays, Maspalomas has some of the best beaches on the island. Apart from the Dunas de Maspalomas there are plenty of traditional style beaches which can be accessed from the resort including the main Maspalomas beach, a wide sandy beach which good facilities and great views of the Faro de Maspalomas lighthouse, Playa del Ingles beach, again with good sand and good facilities, the much quieter San Agustin beach with darker sand, offering good facilites, pedalos, diving and snorkeling.

Maspalomas Weather: Maspalomas enjoys a wonderful climate with dry, sunny conditions throughout the year, and the southern areas of Gran Canaria having the hottest and driest weather, with average daily temperatures ranging between 20° C and 26° C, rainfall is low with December and January generally being the wettest (average 30mm monthly), rainfall between June and September is rare). Maspalomas Shopping: For the best shopping head for the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Ingles.
Maspalomas Golf: The large Campo de Golf Maspalomas course (which can be seen on the map above right), is located beside the beautiful Dunas de Maspalomas offering spectacular views of the dunes and the sea. The 18 hole, Par 73 course is flat with wide fairways, it enjoys gentle sea breezes making it pleasant to play. The course was designed by Mackenzie Ross and opened in 1968. The price for a round of golf at the Campo de Golf Maspalomas (2010) is 95 euros for a round of 18 holes (105 euros at certain times).
Maspalomas Tourist Attractions: Besides the traditional lazing on the beach sunbathing, there are a good choice of other things to do in Maspalomas and the surrounding areas, amongst those that are within easy driving distance are the exotic Palmitos Park, a subtropical oasis around 10km north of Maspalomas, the Holiday World amusement park, the Aquasur Water Park, the largest on the island, Sioux City, a wild west park, and the Mundo Aborigen, a theme park tracing the early history of the Canary Islands.
Maspalomas Water Sports: A popular location for water sports activities, Maspalomas attracts surfers, divers, windsurfers, and anglers among others.

Maspalomas is situated around 20 miles from Las Palmas airport, in the extreme south of Gran Canaria, it can be reached via the GC-1 motorway and the GC-500.
